VPFA Update

Earth Day 2018 takes place this Sunday, April 22. It was founded in 1970 in the United States as a day of education about environmental issues. The holiday is now a global celebration that’s sometimes extended into Earth Week, a full seven days of events focused on green living. In 1990, Earth Day went global, with 200 million people in over 140 nations participating, according to the Earth Day Network, a non-profit organization that coordinates Earth Day activities. The Earth Day Network collaborates with more than 17,000 partners and organizations in 174 countries and it estimates that more than 1 billion people are now involved in Earth Day activities, making it “the largest secular civic event in the world.”

Earth Day events will be taking place all over the Bay Area this weekend, with the most notable local celebration on Saturday, April 21 at the John Muir National Historic Site right here in Martinez. Celebrate John Muir’s birthday along with Earth Day at his former home, and learn how you and your family can find ways to take care of our beautiful planet. Our students are the future caretakers of our Earth, so no matter how you spend Earth Day this weekend, find some fun activities that empower kids to have a positive impact on the planet.

Thank you to everyone who came to the April VPFA meeting this past Wednesday. We discussed the VPFA positions needing to be filled for the 2018-19 school year, along with conducting our regular business and school updates. Next month’s meeting will be the most important of the year, as the election or affirmation of officers takes place at the general meeting in May. Nominees running unopposed will be affirmed at the meeting. If there is more than one candidate for an office, a ballot will be published at least 1 week prior to the May general membership meeting. Director and event/activity chair positions can be filled at any time, no election is necessary.  Please consider volunteering for a VPFA board position, director position or event chair for next year!

Today is the last day to buy tickets for Family Bowling Night! Lanes are filling up fast; it’s going to be a night to remember. Sign up for a lane with friends and enjoy pizza while everyone gets wild during cosmic bowl! Guess which teacher will be the highest scoring bowler in the Bowling for Teachers High Score Raffle, plus special surprises. A flier went home last week but you can print out a flier from the Constant Contact eblast, the parent Facebook page or from the school website. Don’t miss out!

Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend while you enjoy Earth Day.

Eye Testing Volunteers

Chelsea Hylton, the School Nurse at Valhalla, is hoping to recruit 1 or 2 parent volunteers for our visit from UC Berkeley School of Optometry on May 1st.

UCB will be at Valhalla from 8:30am-2:00pm (lunch 12-1pm) performing vision assessments on many of our students.

It would be very helpful to have a volunteer to go to classrooms to bring students to the library. She probably only needs one volunteer at a time, and they don't have to be here all day. Even just a couple of hours would be helpful.

If you are interested, please contact Nurse Hylton by calling or stopping by the office, or emailing her at hyltonc@mdusd.org.

May 9 is Bike to School Day!

WHY bike? It’s fun, it’s healthy, it reduces traffic, and it’s pollution-free!

Students are reminded to use Street Smarts to stay safe while biking, skateboarding, or riding scooters:

Wear helmets

  • Ride on the right side of the road. Go in the same direction as traffic!
  • Make eye contact with other drivers when crossing intersections
  • Stop at red lights and stop signs
  • Walk bikes in crosswalks and on campus

Parents are reminded to use Street Smarts while driving in the 25 MPH school zone.

Your children - and their classmates - are worth the extra time it takes to drive safely.
