The Valhalla Chronicles - May 2017

Mrs. Calbeck's Message

Dear Valhalla Families,

The school year is quickly winding down, and May is a month full of activities. We start off the month with two big events.  The first week is Staff Appreciation Week from May 1- May 5.  We also start the month with the state testing for all third, fourth and fifth graders.  They will be taking the computer adapted tests for English Language Arts and Math as well as Performance assessments in both of these areas known as the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP).  Fifth graders will be piloting an additional test this year in Science, the Computer Adapted Science Test (CAST).

The other events to highlight for the month of May include Kindergarten Orientation on May 9th at 9:30 AM in Thor Hall for parents of incoming kinders; Muffins for Moms on May 12, 7:30 - 8:10 AM in Thor Hall; the Ice Cream Sale and Open House on May 17 6:30 – 8:00 PM;  the Spring Choral and Third Grade Song Flute Concert will be May 22 at 6:00 PM for Song Flutes and 7:00 for the Chorus;  the 5th graders will show their drama skills and teach us a bit of history during their Colonial Play on May 23 at 7:00 PM; the Kindergarten Sing Along on May 31 at 7:00 PM; and we will thank and honor all of our volunteers with a Volunteer Tea on May 31 at 1:15 PM.

On Wednesday, May 31st, the Reading Lab will also host a luncheon to celebrate and honor all the volunteers that work there on a weekly basis. Our Reading Lab serves and supports students either in small groups or with one-to-one instruction. Without volunteers, the Reading Lab could not function.

I want to thank all of our Volunteers who have served in the various positions all year.  We are so grateful to all that you do and our school would not be the same without you.  I want to thank all of the VPFA officers and Directors for their hard work this year and a special thank you to Jen Vanya, our President, for her leadership.  This past weekend we held our annual Auction chaired by Karen Bedinger and a wonderful committee of volunteers who worked hard all year to make this and the On-Line Auction such a success.  We appreciate all your time, effort and energy!  Thank you to all of you for a job well done!

Coming up in June we have all the end of the year events.  Please take special note of the last day of school dismissal times.

Our 5th graders will have their Promotion on Thursday, June 8 at 9 a.m. They will have their end-of-year party from 10:30 am – 2:00 p.m.  Our congratulations and best wishes to our wonderful 5th graders.  Most of them have been a part of Valhalla during the last 6 years and we will miss them! We wish them a wonderful summer and a successful new experience in middle school.

We remind you that the last day of school is Friday, June 9 with 12:30 p.m. dismissal for grades 1 – 5.  ALL Kindergarten students will be Early Friends with an 8:10 – 11:15 am schedule. Please be prompt when picking up your students!

Have an enjoyable three-day weekend on Memorial Day on May 29th while we honor the memory of our veterans.

Sincerely,
